How to check the Search Visibility of a Website

The honest answer to one of the questions we get asked most often.

Poor visibility means potential customers are finding your competitors instead — even if you offer a better service.
The good news: visibility problems are fixable and most of the signals that determine your visibility can be checked for free in just 60 seconds.

Checking the Search Visibility
of your Website

Until recently, checking search visibility meant checking Google. That is no longer sufficient.

In 2026, search visibility means two things: how well Google ranks your pages and whether AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can find, identify and recommend your business. Most businesses only check one. This guide covers both — with a free tool you can use right now.

Search visibility is a measure of how prominently your website appears in search results for the queries that matter to your customers. A site with strong visibility appears near the top of Google for relevant searches, is cited by AI tools when someone asks about your service, and is easily found across multiple platforms and directories.

What is search visibility and why does it matter for your business?

Search visibility is not the same as search ranking. A site can rank well for a handful of terms but have low overall visibility if those terms attract little traffic, or if the site is invisible to AI-powered search tools that millions of users now use daily.

For a local, national or global business, strong search visibility means:

  • Appearing in Google results when customers search for your service and location
  • Being recommended by ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity when someone asks about your type of business
  • Showing correctly in Google Maps and local pack results
  • Being cited accurately in AI-generated answers and overviews
  • Appearing in business directories and citation sources that AI engines cross-reference

If any of these are missing, your visibility is incomplete — and you are losing enquiries to businesses that have got this right.

How to check the search visibility of your website — step by step .

Use these steps in order. Each one checks a different layer of your visibility. You do not need paid tools for most of them.

1. Run a free AI visibility check

Enter your domain at technicalgraffiti.co.uk/free-assessment — nine live checks covering your schema markup, llms.txt, AI crawler access, meta signals, FAQ schema, social sharing tags, Companies House verification and identity signals. Takes 60 seconds. No account needed.

2. Check Google Search Console

Go to Performance → Search Results. Look at total impressions, clicks, and average position. Low impressions with decent rankings suggest your pages are not being indexed properly. Low click-through rate suggests your titles and meta descriptions need work.

3. Test your AI search presence manually

Open ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Perplexity in separate tabs. Search for your service and location — for example 'HVAC contractor Oxfordshire' or 'accountant in Manchester'. Does your business appear? Is the information correct? If not, your AI visibility signals are missing.

4. Check your Google Business Profile

Search Google for your business name. Does a Knowledge Panel appear? Is the name, address, phone number, website and hours accurate and complete? An incomplete or unclaimed Google Business Profile is one of the most common visibility gaps for SMEs.

5. Verify your schema markup

Go to validator.schema.org and enter your homepage URL. This checks whether your site has structured data — the machine-readable code that tells Google and AI engines what type of business you are, where you are, and how to contact you.

6. Check your llms.txt file

Visit yourdomain.co.uk/llms.txt in your browser. If you get a 404 error, the file does not exist. llms.txt is a plain-text file that AI models read to understand your business identity, services and credentials. Without it, AI engines have to guess who you are from your webpage content alone.

7. Add OpenGraph tags

to your homepage so social sharing previews display correctly.

8. Review your citation consistency

Your business name, address and phone number (NAP) must be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Yell, Bing Places and any other directory listing. Inconsistent NAP data causes AI engines to lose confidence in your business identity.

What the AI visibility signals mean and how they are checked.

When you run a free check on your domain, these are the nine signals being tested and why each one matters for your search visibility.
Signal 1:
AI Identity File (llms.txt): Checks whether a readable llms.txt file exists at your domain root. AI engines read this to understand your business identity, services and credentials.
Signal 2:
Business Identity Data (Schema): Presence of LocalBusiness or organisation schema markup in your page head. Tells Google and AI engines what type of business you are, your location, and how to contact you.
Signal 3:
AI Crawler Access: Whether your robots.txt permits AI crawlers including GPTBot and ClaudeBot. If AI crawlers are blocked, they cannot read your site at all.
Signal 4:
Security and Trust: Whether your site uses HTTPS correctly. A baseline trust signal for both Google and AI engines.
Signal 5:
Search Signals (meta): Presence and quality of your meta description. Used by Google in search snippets and by AI engines to summarise your business.
Signal 6:
FAQ Schema: Presence of FAQPage structured data. Enables your content to appear in AI-generated answers and Google FAQ rich results.
Signal 7:
Social Sharing (OpenGraph): og:title, og:description and og:image tags. Controls how your site appears when shared on LinkedIn and WhatsApp.
Signal 8:
Companies House: Whether your Companies House registration URL is in your schema sameAs array. Verifies your business is a registered UK company.
Signal 9:
Identity Signals (sameAs): Whether trusted external profile URLs — LinkedIn, GBP, Companies House — are linked in your schema. Cross-referencing increases AI confidence in your business.

Why AI search visibility is now part of the picture for websites.

Until recently, checking search visibility meant checking Google. That is no longer sufficient. In 2026, a significant and growing proportion of users now use AI tools — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot — to find and evaluate businesses before making contact.

AI-generated answers work differently to traditional search results. Instead of returning a list of links, AI tools synthesise an answer from the information they can read about your business. If your website lacks the structured signals AI engines use — schema markup, llms.txt, verified identity references — your business will either be absent from AI-generated answers, or described inaccurately.

The difference between Google visibility
and AI visibility.

Google visibility is primarily driven by content quality, backlinks, page speed and technical SEO. AI visibility is driven by structured data, machine-readable identity files, and cross-referenced business credentials. A business can rank well on Google but be invisible to AI engines — and vice versa.

How to improve
your AI search visibility.

  • Add LocalBusiness schema markup to your homepage — include your business name, address, phone, service areas and trading hours
  • Create and upload a llms.txt file to your domain root — a plain-text summary of your business identity, services and credentials
  • Add FAQPage schema to your most important pages — answer the questions your customers actually search for
  • Add your Companies House registration URL and LinkedIn company page to your schema sameAs array
  • Update your robots.txt to explicitly permit GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and other AI crawlers
  • Ensure your meta description is present, factual and under 155 characters
  • Add OpenGraph tags to your homepage so social sharing previews display correctly
  • Keep your NAP data — name, address, phone — identical across your website, GBP and directory listings

Frequently asked questions.

Use Google Search Console for Google-specific visibility data, and the Technical Graffiti free assessment tool for AI visibility signals. Both are free. The free assessment runs nine live checks on your domain and returns results in under 60 seconds — no account required.

For AI visibility, a score of 80 or above is considered good. A score of 100/100 means all signals are correctly in place. Scores below 60 indicate significant gaps that are likely affecting your visibility in AI-generated search results and recommendations.

The most common reasons are: missing schema markup, no llms.txt file, AI crawlers blocked in robots.txt, or insufficient cross-referenced identity signals. Run a free check on your domain to identify exactly which signals are missing.

Technical AI visibility signals — schema, llms.txt, robots.txt — can be installed and take effect within days. AI engines re-crawl frequently. Google SEO improvements typically take weeks to months depending on the competitiveness of your target keywords.

Not for AI visibility signals. Schema markup can be added via Rank Math or Yoast in WordPress without touching code. llms.txt and robots.txt are plain text files you can create and upload yourself. Technical Graffiti generates all the required files automatically from your domain — no developer required.

No — they overlap but are distinct. Traditional SEO focuses on ranking in Google's organic results through content, backlinks and technical optimisation. AI visibility focuses on being correctly identified, understood and recommended by AI search tools. Both matter for a complete search presence in 2026.
