GEO · AEO · MY BUSINESS ISN'T SHOWING IN AI SEARCH RESULTS
Why isn’t my business appearing in AI search?
You have searched for your business on ChatGPT or Perplexity. Your competitor came up. You did not. This is not a content problem or a reputation problem. It is a technical problem — and it is fixable.
Your business is not invisible to AI because it is not good enough. It is invisible because it is missing the specific technical signals AI engines need to recommend it with confidence.
Why is my competitor appearing in AI search but not me?
When a potential customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to recommend a business in your trade or sector, one name comes up. It is not always the biggest business. It is not always the one with the best reviews. It is the one whose website has the technical signals AI engines can read and verify.
Your competitor has those signals in place. You do not. That is the entire difference.
AI engines do not browse websites the way Google does. They look for specific structured files and data points — schema markup, an llms.txt file, correct AI crawler permissions, FAQ schema. If those files exist on a website, the AI can read them directly and recommend that business with confidence. If they do not exist, the AI either guesses or skips the business entirely.
Most businesses do not have these files. Not because they have done anything wrong — but because these are relatively new requireme
AI search does not work like Google.
Google ranks pages based on content, links and authority signals built up over years. Your Google SEO has no bearing on whether you appear in AI search results. A business can have page 1 Google rankings and be completely invisible to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
They are separate systems with separate inputs.
Google reads your content. AI engines read structured signals — specific technical files that either exist on your website or they do not. No amount of blog posts, backlinks or Google optimisation creates those signals. They have to be built and placed deliberately.
7 reasons your business is not showing up in AI search results.
These are the most common causes. Most businesses have several of them.
Reason 1:
Your website has no schema markup.
Schema markup is structured data added to your website's code. It tells AI engines your business name, type, address, phone number, services, service areas and legal identity in a format machines can read directly.
Without it, AI engines infer your identity from your web pages. Inferences are imprecise. Imprecise identity means lower recommendation confidence — or no recommendation at all.
The fix:
Schema markup added correctly to your website — LocalBusiness type, all core fields populated, plus FAQPage schema on any questions section.
Reason 2:
You do not have an llms.txt file.
AI crawlers — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot — look for a file called llms.txt at the root of your website. It is a plain-text document that describes your business directly to AI models: what you do, who you serve, where you operate.
Without it, AI systems read your website and make inferences. Inferences introduce uncertainty. Uncertainty reduces the likelihood of recommendation.
The fix:
An accurate, specific llms.txt file at yourdomain.co.uk/llms.txt — not a template, a file that describes your actual business.
Reason 3:
AI crawlers cannot access your website.
Your robots.txt file controls which crawlers are allowed in. Many websites have robots.txt files set up years ago that inadvertently block GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.
If a crawler cannot get in, the AI it serves cannot recommend you.
The fix:
Check yourdomain.co.uk/robots.txt — verify that GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are explicitly permitted.
Does your site pass the AI visibility check?
The only proof that matters is your own.
Run the free check on your own domain. Whatever comes back is real — generated live, against your actual website, in front of you. Nobody can fake that on your behalf.
AI engines cross-reference your business across Google Business Profile, Yell, Checkatrade, Trustpilot, FreeIndex and other directories. When your business name, address or phone number differs across those sources, AI confidence in your identity drops.
Lower confidence means lower recommendation likelihood.
The fix:
A citation audit — confirming your canonical business name, address and phone number and correcting discrepancies across every major directory.
Reason 5:
Your website has no content AI can cite.
If your website is a list of services and a contact form, there is nothing for an AI to cite when someone asks a question in your area.
A FAQ section or an explainer page with accurate, specific answers to questions your customers actually ask gives AI something to use and attribute to your business.
The fix:
Substantive, accurate content that directly answers questions your customers ask — specific to your trade and your location.
Reason 6:
Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unverified.
Google's AI Overview uses GBP data heavily for local recommendations. An unverified profile is not treated as authoritative. An incomplete profile cannot match service-specific queries.
No reviews means no social proof.
The fix:
Claim and verify your GBP. Populate every field — name, categories, description, services, opening hours, phone, website, photos. It is free.
Reason 7:
A competitor has done this and you have not.
Sometimes the reason you are not appearing is simply that someone else is doing something right.
A competitor with schema markup, llms.txt, a complete GBP and consistent citations will be recommended over you — not because they are better at their trade, but because they have sent the signals AI needs.
The fix:
Do the work. For most small businesses the core files can be generated and deployed in minutes, not weeks.
